Autumn Equinox, September 23, 2010

It's officially Autumn!
And with the equinox, celebrations of harvest begin and general fall festival fun start taking place in schools, churches and communities all over the world in this beautiful season of September!

The Equinox also marks the Mabon festival, which is the 2nd of 3 harvest festivals in the  Pagan "Wheel of the year" and is also time for "balance" and "reflection".

This mabon tote has an illustration of a grape vine wreath with three groups of three hazelnuts tied with red ribbon. Bright autumn maple leaves, ginko leaves and bittersweet berries are woven in with a corn husk bow adorning the bottom.

Take along this autumn bag to carry your garden bounty. After all, Mabon is all about the food!

Surreal Renaissance Masterpiece! This is a reproduction of the surrealistic portrait of Autumn, painted by the Italian Renaissance Mannerist painter Giuseppe Acrimboldo almost five hundred years ago. ~ Giuseppe Acrimboldo (1530-1593) is known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of as fruits, vegetables, flowers and fish. He had a definite influence on Salvadore Dali, who liked to refer to him as "the father of Surrealism."

This pirate ship image is from a story in Arabian Nights called 'The History of Codadad & His Brothers." It was created by the American Artist Maxfield Parrish in 1909.

Parrish's paintings are a combination of fantasy landscapes and fairy tales, with saturated color and luminosity. He would apply bright layers of thin oil paint, alternating with varnish over stretched paper to get the luminous effects he was known for. He would often build depth by cutting out images and adding them to his paper, coating them with layers of glaze.

The romance and appeal of the sea is just as strong as it was in the days of sailing ships. Underwater explorers found Whydah, the only verified pirate shipwreck ever discovered. Every shipwreck is a time capsule, and each artifact tells a story. History conceals a lot of pirate stories. To that end, this picture is about the romance of the sea and pirate treasures lost and found, and about sea mysteries solved and unsolved.

Vintage illustration children and babies image with a child dressed as a pirate wearing a newspaper hat with a skull and crossbones and speaking with a parrot. AAARRRGH! Speak like a Pirate matey!

Ghost ships are still afloat today, but believed haunted by ghosts. Phototropism. The tendency of plants and leaves grow toward the light. Also called heliotropism. Phototropism is directional plant growth in which the direction of growth is determined by the direction of the light source. Growth towards a light source is a positive phototropism, while growth away from light is called negative phototropism.

Niagara Falls Publicity Stunt Poster

This design is based on an actual event that took place at Niagara Falls in 1827. As a publicity stunt, a few local hotel owners bought an old schooner, decorated it to look like a pirate ship, then sent two bears, two raccoons, a goose, a dog, and a buffalo over the falls in it. This seriously happened! Madness.
